Clodagh O'Shea talks with Roger Bingham about what viruses have taught us about the genetics of cancer and ways of using that knowledge to create viruses that selectively target genetic changes in tumor cells.

For more on the biology of cancer, TSN recommends Siddhartha Mukherjee's The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer.

Clodagh O'Shea is an assistant professor in the Molecular and Cell Biology Laboratory at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. Her research focuses on using adenovirus, the cause of acute respiratory distress syndrome, to understand and treat cancer.
