Alan Trounson


Alan Trounson was appointed president of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine in 2008 and is responsible for the management of the $3 billion fund for stem cell research in California. Under his leadership, CIRM has constructed 12 new Californian Stem Cell Research Institutes, raising more than $800 million in donor contributions. His research focused on oocyte and embryo manipulation and in 1977, together with Professor Carl Wood at Monash University, they pioneered human in vitro fertilization. He has founded several startups and organizations, including Embryonic Stem Cell International (ESI) Pte (merged with Biotime Inc. 2010 – m.c. $246 million in 2011), the first Australian Biotechnology Centre of Excellence – Australian Stem Cell Centre in 2003, established the Monash Immunology and Stem Cell Laboratories (MISCL) in 2004, co-founded the Low Cost IVF Foundation in Switzerland in 2007 and the non-profit, Friends of Low Cost IVF USA in 2011. He has published over 347 peer reviewed scientific journal articles, 13 books, 99 book chapters and numerous conference, news and views articles. Dr. Trounson is an Honorary Fellow Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Fellow ad eundem, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and has been awarded numerous awards and medals. Dr. Trounson received his Ph.D. from Sydney University, Australia.
